Les sources d’eaux chaudes
Les Pyrénées comptent de nombreuses villes thermales et sources d’eaux chaudes. En effet, les profondeurs du massif sont le lieu de frictions dans l’écorce terrestre qui sont à l’origine des eaux chaudes.L’eau qui s’infiltre entre les roches granitiques, s’enfonce à 5 km de profondeur et se charge, au passage, de souffre, de nombreux minéraux et de gaz bénéfiques pour la santé. Ce processus est une affaire de temps long : il faut 13000 ans pour que l’eau de surface atteigne cette profondeur. Lors de sa descente, l’eau qui s’est réchauffée de 3 degrés tous les 100 m atteint la température de 130 degrés. Ainsi, l’eau ou la neige remplie de gaz (et donc moins dense), remonte en quelques heures à la surface, via une faille, à une température de 75,7 degrés Celsius.
Les bains de Saint Thomas ont été exploités à partir de 1870 en tant qu’établissement thermal. En 1993, la mairie de Fontpédrouse décide de créer un centre thermoludique. Le succès est immédiat. L’eau qui jaillit des profondeurs à une température de 58 degrés, doit être refroidie. Elle est bicarbonatée, riche en fluor, en silice et en oligo-éléments. Un plancton thermal spécifique est réputé pour son action antalgique, décontractante, antiallergique et cicatrisante.
Henri Salvayre, hydrogéologue, réalise depuis 30 ans les sondages et les captages des bains de Dorres et de Llo.
Les Bains de Llo ont une eau avec une teneur élevée en sulfates et on note la présence de lythium. Elle est utilisée dans le cadre de la relaxation et du bien-être, et non dans un but thérapeutique. L’eau est quand même bénéfique en cas de problèmes de peau, d’asthme et pour la récupération musculaire.
Les sources des Escaldes sont connues depuis l’époque romaine (voir article sur la présence des romains en Cerdagne). Les Bains de Dorres étaient utilisés pour laver le linge, les peaux ou la laine des moutons. En 1991, la mairie décide de créer des bains. Ils sont réputés pour la qualité de leurs eaux et les vertus adoucissantes et relaxantes.
